Philip Seymour Hoffman, born on 23 July 1967 in Fairport, New York, was an American actor, director, and producer of film and theater. He graduated with a degree in drama in 1989 at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. While studying he supported himself by working as an usher.

He made his on-screen debut an episode of Law & Order in 1991, and his first film appearance in the move Triple Bogey on a Par Five Hole the same year. He is best known for his numerous supporting roles in films, but won multiple awards for his lead role in Capote in 2005.

As a young adult he struggled with drug addiction. After 23 years of sobriety he relapsed in 2013. On 2 February 2014 he was found dead with a syringe of heroin still in his arm. The official cause of death was acute mixed drug intoxication, including heroin, cocaine, amphetamine and benzodiazepines.
