Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin, born Josef Vissarionovich Djugashvili on 18 December 1878 in Gori, Tiflis Governorate, Russian Empire, was the leader of the Soviet Union from the mid-1920s until his death in 1953. He held the post of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and was effectively the dictator of the state.

Joseph Stalin was one of the seven members of the first Politburo, which was founded in 1917 to manage the Bolshevik Revolution. In 1922 he was appointed General Secretary of the party’s Central Committee. Following the death of Vladimir Lenin in 1924, he managed to consolidate power by suppressing Vladimir Lenin’s criticisms and expanding the functions of his role, all the while eliminating any opposition.

From 1941 onward he served as the Premier of the Soviet Union from 1941.He also remained General Secretary until the post was abolished in 1952. After suffering a stroke, caused by high blood pressure, on 2 March 1953, Joseph Stalin died at the age of 74 on 5 March 1953 in Kuntsevo Dacha, Kuntsevo, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union.
