Training Routine

In 1983, David Bowie decided to get in shape in order to face the grueling demands of a world tour. Disinterested in most forms of exercise, he turned boxing to prepare for his upcoming Serious Moonlight tour. For six weeks he trained at an old gym in downtown Austin; running the steps of the UT football stadium, and then working the heavy bags. His formal training ended when we had to go on tour, but he never lost his appreciation for the sport and continued to train on and off for the next couple of decades.

David Bowie Quotes

“I quite like boxing — but that’s only because I use it as a training method. Just recently I’ve started again. You look at yourself and think [pats stomach] that could go. And boxing’s not as boring as pumping bleedin’ metal all day, which bores the shit out of me.”

“I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”

“I always had a repulsive need to be something more than human. I felt very puny as a human. I thought, ‘Fuck that. I want to be a superhuman.”
